SPRAVATO®
SPRAVATO®, also known by its generic name esketamine, is a groundbreaking medication designed to address treatment-resistant clinical depression, a condition where traditional antidepressants have proven ineffective. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), SPRAVATO® represents a significant advancement in the field of mental health treatment.
SPRAVATO® operates on a unique mechanism of action compared to traditional antidepressants. It is an NMDA receptor antagonist, and it works by influencing glutamate, a neurotransmitter. This novel approach helps regulate mood and reduce depressive symptoms.
The duration of your SPRAVATO® treatment will be decided in partnership with your healthcare provider, who will take into consideration how you respond to the treatment and the stability of that response.
After completing eight weeks of treatment, your healthcare provider will evaluate how you are feeling and make adjustments to the dosing frequency as needed. It is essential to remember that SPRAVATO® should be taken alongside an oral antidepressant as part of your treatment plan.
SPRAVATO® is administered as a nasal spray, typically under the supervision of a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting.
On treatment day it is essential to remember:
- Plan transportation for treatment days as you will not be able to drive.
- Self-administer the nasal spray under healthcare provider supervision.
- Expect a monitoring period of at least two hours to check for side effects.
- You may only leave the treatment facility when your healthcare provider gives the go-ahead.
- Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring full alertness until the day after treatment, following a restful sleep.
Clinical trials have shown that SPRAVATO® can produce rapid and significant improvements in depressive symptoms, often when other treatments have failed. However, it may not be effective for everyone, and its long-term benefits are still being studied.
Like any medication, SPRAVATO® has potential side effects, including sedation, and increased blood pressure. Patients are closely monitored during and after treatment to ensure safety.
SPRAVATO® is typically reserved for individuals who have not responded adequately to at least two different antidepressant treatments. Healthcare providers carefully evaluate patients to determine if SPRAVATO® is a suitable option.
